Pachaikili Muthucharam : A Prostitute's Mesmerism

Gautam Menon, perhaps a little overrated at this point of time, has finally produced an enervated endeavor. Despite the time he has taken, especially after the kamal knock-out, he still seems to be a little uncomfortable.

The story deals with an attached and an ordinary family man who tries to lead a happy life with his lovable wife, similar to a Tamil quote: “Nalladhoru kudumbam, palhalaikazhagam” which means a cute home symbolizing an institution. But, we must also remember one more quote: “Namma onnu ninaicha, deivam onnu ninakum” which means man proposes but god disposes. His child in the movie gets affected by Diabetes and things get a little serious initially. This makes Andrea,
Sarath’s wife to be a lot more maternal and caring which also makes her refuse to have any further sex with sarath. This embarrasses sarath for obvious reasons and modifies him completely. The reluctance keeps the snappy sarath aloof and slightly distant from the family. Yet, his emotions towards the child remain benevolent and were well underplayed in the m
ovie. Ultimately, he resorts to a surrogate jothika, who also happens to worry a lot about her husband. These two, meet and put up a duplex at the station roads. The conventional compartment in which they meet mutate into a lover’s limbo. Repeated rendezvous and desperate dating not only append them together, but also, keep their minds further away from their homes. While Jo shows some genuine love towards him, sarath seems to be a little hesitant in his talks. Once she takes him to a hotel and decides to stay there for sometime. Things get all set until Milind Soman unanticipatedly enters the room, beats up sarath, rapes Jo, and later extorts and extracts money from them. Due to constant coercion, Sarath gets distressed until he notices on one fine
day that this was all prearranged by the jo-milind consortium who are actually Bombay street-walkers. He then opens the fact to his wife and decides to t
ake back all his money from the mob. In the process, he traces out yet another person who also gets derailed in a similar way , and collars them red-handedly in the same hotel. Finally, he takes all his money and leaves the city with his wife while the alliance assails back and gets them into further trouble. At last, he fights against them, gives them back his money as alms and leaves the place with his family.

Directly analyzing:
Sarath plays an amiable and an affectionate father, with underplayed emotions, especially in his second romance with Jo and also fights back majestically. While Jo kicks-off exquisitely as a street-walker, she struggles to deliver at the end and it seems as if the last few scenes were hurriedly shot (perhaps a single take). Andrea literally seeks space for performance, yet makes a neat job as a warm-hearted wife and a mellow mom. Milind Soman’s presence was unwarranted except for the fact that a male criminal was all behind this stuff.
Technically: Arvind Krishna’s lenses revealed Jo’s character and helped in some stimulating and spontaneous stunt scenes with sarath. Cuts have proven costly for screenplay. Also, dance was quite unduly used.Music enhances luxurious romance with Jo and “unakkul naan…”was the pick of the lot. Otherwise, positioning of the songs was a little untimely.
Ultimately, Gautam has given finally a half-hearted history of the evolution of a practical spider (silundhi)-man through his ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’.

HINDUS : "HELL WITH HUSSAIN"

In several cases, we find India proving itself best in issues like corruption and population explosion. Besides this, India is evergreen rich in art and religion. But it is essential that one should not affect the other. Here, we find an established popular artist playing with the religious values of the public in the name of artistic freedom.
M.F.Hussain, an exquisite, exalted and an ethnic painter made his last work with uncontrollable controversies. Some of his earlier paintings were remarkable and stole many a hearts. His step into the film industry with 2 fabulous themes is a worthy mention. Not only in his movies, but even his paintings had themes such as immortalization of Madhuri Dixit, followed by Amrita Rao . But his last piece was quite different. The concept of drawing nude gods was his intention. This was later claimed to be an avant-garde license. But the consequence of this act was very much alarming.
Culturally, it was claimed to be weird due to obvious reasons. Religiously, rival Hindus were taken aback. They felt that a Muslim had insulted a Hindu god. This further ruptures the apparent presence of Hindu-Muslim unity.
Now, the expatriate seems pitiable, but it is essential that artists understand that their opinions play an integral part in the society and their art speak to the public.
